Terrano Plumbing and Remodeling leads by example when it comes to water and energy conservation. Here in the United States; we use three times as much potable water than is used in Europe. We understand there is a problem and we’re taking action. More than one-third of all states, representing 60% of the population of the United States, have adopted water conservation standards. With the green products and services we offer, you can conserve water, save money and Go Green, Save Some Green! It’s time to be Water Efficient! It is obvious that we cannot increase demands for water much more without detrimental effects to the environment, society and the economy.
It’s time to become water efficient! This involves reassessing our relationship with water, and learning to use it more sparingly. On the most basic level, it requires a behavioral change, and assigning a value to water that truly reflects its worth.
In fact, many of the impacts associated with water use are likely to have an effect on our own lives! If we are going to allow future generations to enjoy a similar standard of living that we enjoy now, we must change our behavior patterns before it’s too late!

- Almost 80% of the earth’s surface is covered in water. Of this, 97% is salt water, 2% is glacial ice. That leaves less than 1% as fresh water for us to use.
- The human body is about 70% water; we cannot survive more than a week without water. A mere 10% of our home water supply is used in the kitchen and as drinking water.
- Indoor water use peaks twice a day year-round, in the mornings and evenings.
- The biggest peaks during the year occur in the summer, when about half to three quarters of all municipally treated water is sprayed onto lawns.
In the Bathroom:
- Convert your old toilet to a dual flush toilet and save over 15,000 gallons a year and $100.00 cash back in your pocket.
- Better yet, for even greater savings and efficiency, replace your water-guzzling 3.5 gallon to 5 gallon a flush toilet with a 1.28 High Efficiency Toilet. Larger trap ways exit the waste product that much quicker.
- Put a plastic bottle or a plastic bag weighted with pebbles and filled with water in your toilet tank. Displacing water in this manner allows you to use less water with each flush. Saves 5 to 10 gallons a day.
- That’s up to 300 gallons a month, even more for large families. Better yet, for even greater savings, replace your water-guzzling five to seven gallon a flush toilet with a one and a half gallon, ultra-low flush model.
- If you’re taking a shower, don’t waste cold water while waiting for hot water to reach the shower head. Catch that water in a container to use on your outside plants or to flush your toilet. Saves 200 to 300 gallons a month.
- Check toilet for leaks. Put dye tablets or food coloring into the tank. If color appears in the bowl without flushing, there’s a leak that should be repaired. Saves 400 gallons a month.
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Saves 3 gallons each day.
- Turn off the water while shaving. Fill the bottom of the sink with a few inches of water to rinse your razor. Saves 3 gallons each day.
In the Kitchen:
- If you wash dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running during rinsing. If you have two sinks, fill one with rinse water. If you only have one sink, use a spray device or short blasts instead of letting the water run. Saves 200 to 500 gallons a month.
- When washing dishes by hand, use the least amount of detergent possible. This minimizes rinse water needed. Saves 50 to 150 gallons a month.
- Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator. This beats the wasteful habit of running tap water to cool it for drinking. Saves 200 to 300 gallons a month.
- Don’t defrost frozen foods with running water. Either plan ahead by placing frozen items in the refrigerator overnight or defrost them in the microwave. Saves 50 to 150 gallons a month.
- Don’t let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Rinse them in a filled sink or pan. Saves 150 to 250 gallons a month.
- Use the garbage disposal in the kitchen to reduce greenhouse gases. Garbage disposals are green!
